What are some tips for my PSA? We’re looking for your creative talents on video… dancing, performing, acting, directing or singing. Be bold! Make us laugh! Just make the point to your friends and classmates that loud noise causes hearing loss!

Here are some facts and ideas that can help in determining your direction

Areas that can cause noise-related hearing loss (NRHL)

Rock concerts
Headsets/ear buds at high volume
Rockin’ retail outlets
Movie theaters – surround sound
Sports events
Motorcycles

Hearing loss is common
35 million Americans have a significant hearing loss
#1 chronic birth defect
13 in 100 students have some form of hearing loss

Consequences or difficulties facing the student
with hearing loss can miss:
Whispered invitations
Plays said quickly in a huddle
Teacher instructions
Warnings from refs

Lack of awareness
80% of those diagnosed with hearing loss
don’t go for help (we don’t know what we don’t hear)

Prevention
Turn it to the left, or keep the volume in a mid-range
Use inexpensive noise-reduction earplugs like those found at local drug stores
You certainly have a right to complain at parties, stores and restaurants that provide uncomfortably loud music

How do I mail my PSA to Empowerment Through Hearing: All contest entries must be submitted on a CD or DVD and postmarked no later than April 15, 2009 to:

Kathlyn Maguire, Empowerment Through Hearing
1701 South Flagler Drive (#1605)

And finally, the entry must be accompanied by a Copyright Form an Information Form and a Release Form (see "Contest Requirements").
